It seems that political correctness has become essential to doing well in or even winning beauty pageants. This is exactly what happened to a contestant representing the town of San Antonio in the Binibining Zambales 2015.
During the Binibining Zambales 2015 Q&A, Paula Marie Napuli’s anti-gay answer to a question by one of the panel of judges was slammed by the audience.
Responding to a question given by Ms. International 2013 Bea Rose Santiago, “What is your opinion on homosexuality?” Ms. Napuli responded:
“I don’t agree on (sic) their situation right now. It’s because I still believe in sacred… the Bible says that… God said…”
She was not able to immediately finish her answer to the question as the audience began to loudly taunt the candidate. The audience was heard shouting, “Talo na yan! (She will not win for sure!)”
Ms. Santiago in the meantime berated the audience telling them that Ms. Napuli has the right to express her opinion and everyone has to respect it. She also stressed that “it is hard to be on stage… so let her talk.”
Paula Marie Napuli stood by her answer and continued, “I believe that God made man and a woman that will last forever on a sacred matrimony and they will… and they will make a vow in front of the altar. Thank you.”
Ms. Napuli did not go home with the crown . Instead, an architecture student, Nichole Dichoso was proclaimed the winner of Binibining Zambales 2015.
Paula Marie Napuli’s anti-gay answer in or Binibining Zambales 2015 nevertheless made this year’s contest controversial thus drawing a lot of attention to the local beauty pageant.
