Blue whale suicide challenge monitored for being dangerous

Blue whale suicide challenge is being monitored by the authorities for allegedly being dangerous for kids.

Last year, an 11-year old kid died of drug overdose and it is being suspected that this is because of thus online challenge.

According to a BBC article- “ The “Blue Whale challenge” was reported to be an online “suicide game” aimed at teenagers which set 50 tasks over 50 days. The challenge was alleged to be linked to numerous deaths around the world. But little about the “game” was quite as it seemed. “

At first the tasks were simple, like “Wake up in the middle of the night” or “Watch a scary film” . However, as days pass the tasks becomes weirder.

An example would be “Stand on the ledge of a tower block” or “Cut a whale into your arm.”. The last challenge was said to ask the users to kill themselves.

BBC also reported that this challenge was started by a girl in Russia named Rina Palenkova. Last November of 2015, she posted a photo of her “a black scarf is wrapped around her mouth and nose. She is sticking her middle finger up at the camera. It looks like it’s covered in dried blood. The photo’s caption read: “Nya bye”. The next day, she took her own life.

Here in the Philippines, authorities have been alerted.

Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) acting Secretary Eliseo Rio  said that this is considered as cyberbullying. He however admitted it will be hard to block the site.

He recommends that parents should strictly guide their children in using gadgets.
