Tourism Sec. Bernadette Romulo-Puyat has confirmed the Boracay October soft opening, but with limited carrying capacity for tourist accommodation.
In a news interview, she explained that only 3,000-5,000 rooms will be available for tourists when the island re-opens. It was also mentioned that there will be a big difference from the old Boracay known for being a “party place”.
“It won’t be like a really party place anymore. We want it to be more as it is, we want it to be more peaceful. We want to promote sustainable tourism,” she said.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) secretary also said that there will be no casinos in the island as repeatedly directed by President Rodrigo Duterte. As for the increasing no. of resorts, she mentioned that it may not happen as the entry of tourists will be controlled.
Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu has been studying the carrying capacity of the island, which will be strictly enforced by DOT on the Boracay October soft opening .
Despite the closure last April of one of the considered best tourist destination in the Philippines, Sec. Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said that June data showed that tourism arrivals still increased by 11% . This is because private sectors have been directing the tourists in other destinations, which DOT secretary was thankful for.
