Cavite Bishop Richard Alcantara of the Sacred Order of St. Michael Archangel was arrested by authorities last Thursday.
According to an Inquirer report, he was caught in the act of inhaling shabu or methamphetamine hydrochloride in Cavite.
Bacoor police chief Supt. Vicente Cabatingan confirmed this incident and said they conducted months of a surveillance operation before the arrest.
“It took us several months to collar him because we wanted to catch him in flagrante delicto or in the act of committing the crime and have hard evidence to stand in court. We have a video of him sniffing shabu,” he said.
They also monitored the Bishop last January 21, while he was celebrating mass at the Holy Theotokos Church in Trece Martires City.
The allegation was not denied by the Cavite Bishop, who explained that he got addicted to shabu while doing research about the government’s campaign against illegal drugs.
Furthermore, Bishop Alcantara admitted to the police that he has been taking five grams of shabu everyday and that he used the money he is receiving from his congregation in the UK to buy illegal drugs.
“He sniffs shabu in the morning, lunchtime and by nighttime,”
Supt. Vicente Cabatingan said.
Bishop Alcantara has a degree in Bachelor of Science in Theology and was ordained at the Imus Cathedral. He has performed blessing of houses and vehicles, and baptism of children.
Also nabbed with Bishop Alcantara was his companion Perlito Aliba, alias “Bindo” . The two are now detained at Bacoor police station and are waiting for filing of charges against at the prosecutor’s office.
The Cavite police were also tracking a drug pusher named Fernando Dacuma, alias Nanding, in Barangay Alima. However he managed to escape.
