DepEd Announcement: 2016 First day of School

Department of Education (DepEd) has announced that the 2016 first day of school will be on June 13,2016.

This DepEd announcement is for students in public schools from elementary, junior and senior high school. There is no official memorandum yet for the school calendar for SY 2016-2017. However, DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro affirmed this announcement.

On the other hand, private schools has the discretion to deviate from the scheduled 2016 first day of school , but it must be in compliance with the law.

According to Republic Act 7797 (An Act to Lengthen the School Calendar from Two Hundred (200) Days to Not More Than Two Hundred Twenty (220) Class Days), the law that governs the school calendar, schools must commence not earlier than the first Monday of June and not later than the last day of August.

DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro stressed that though private schools may choose their own first day of school, DepEd officials must be notified in advance.

SY 2016-2017 marks the scheduled implementation of the K-12 program, which added two more years in our country’s basic education. There is now Grade 10 (formerly called fourth year), who must enroll first as “senior high school”, before they can proceed to higer education or college programs.

Last school year (SY 2015-2016) , classes began on June 1, 2015 (Monday) under DepEd order 9, series of 2015. DepEd has set 201 school days SY 2015-2016.
