A new system of online Philippine Passport renewal is now being explored!
According to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano , the government is testing new technology that will make it possible to renew passports without having to go to consular offices.
“One of these technologies shown to me, ‘yung cellphone kukuhanan lang ng picture ‘yung passport, and then magse-selfie ka. ‘Yung face mo ico-compare sa passport. Then we can mail you the (renewed) passport already,”
Sec. Cayetano said that the new system is still on the works, but they are planning to launch it by 2019.
While this sounds really good to passport holders, this online Philippine Passport renewal has a limitation that may affect many.
Only passports issued from August 2016 onwards can be processed with this new scheme.
‘Nung tinurn over sa amin ‘yung data noong 2014, aside from obsolete, corrupted na yung ibang data. (But) Once we have the biometrics, puwede nang hindi na magpakita sa offices and we can do the renewals online,” Sec. Cayetano explained.
Currently, DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) is being scrutinized by the public because the slots for appointment either for renewal or new application is always full. Usually, the appointment date will be plotted 3 mos. away from the day the online appointment was done.
