Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge that links Estrella Street in Rockwell, Makati to Barangka Drive in Mandaluyong was closed today by authorities. This is to give way to the bridge’s reconstruction, which will take two and a half years to finish. The project is expected to be completed in 2021.
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) confirmed that the two lanes of the bridge will be expanded to four lanes. This was confirmed by MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia in a press briefing . He said that the bridge will be demolished and replaced with a new and wider one.
According to MMDA Spokesperson Asec. Celine Pialago , the Makati-Mandaluyong bridge reconstruction is part of the Php 5.27-billion Chinese grant, which the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge in Manila will also benefit from. China Road and Bridge Corporation will be doing the the civil works.
Since the Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge serves as a shortcut route for many motorists, closure would surely affect traffic flow.
MMDA estimates around 100,000 uses the bridge. Traffic will be re-routed starting Monday to Makati-Mandaluyong Bridge or EDSA Guadalupe Bridge.
Aside from motorists, around 200 informal settler families who dwell below and near the bridge will also be affected. Prior to closure MMDA has conducted clearing operations and issuance of citation tickets to owners of illegally-parked vehicles on alternative routes.
