FIBA brawl at Gilas- Australia team match

FIBA brawl happened today at the Pilpinas Gilas and Australian team game.

With only 4:01 left in the third quarter of FIBA World Cup Asian qualifier game between Gilas Pilipinas and Australia , players of the two teams got involved in a physical fight. Australian team was leading at  79-48 score.

It all allegedly started when Australia’s Daniel Kickert  hit Roger Pogoy at a blindside angle. The two had already been in each other’s throat most of the time during the game.

This was followed by a more intense FIBA brawl when majority of the players of each team started pitching in.

Jayson Castro was seen letting out a  punch and Andray Blatche shoved a member of the AU team.  Calvin Abueva, Matthew Wright, and Carl Bryan Cruz who were at the bench rushed to the court got involved. Matthew Wright chased an Australian player with a punch all the way to the other side of the court. Thon Maker of AU team was seen kicking few Gilas players, also hitting Terrence Romeo.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President Al Panlilio released a statement saying-

“Hindi po kanais-nais ang nangyari,” said Panlilio, some 30 minutes after the brawl occurred. “I just want to appeal to everybody to please settle down. We didn’t want what happened to happen…We are hosting this game, and this is basketball. We will wait for the referees for their decision, but please respect the game, and may our visitors feel safe in the arena,” he said

“Let’s just enjoy the game, everybody calm down, and respect the decision that will come out from the review of the refs.” he added.
