Manila APEC Summit will be missed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. News circulated after Department of Foreign Affairs Laura del Rosario confirmed that Indonesian President Joko Widodo won’t be able to make it to the meeting.
According to CNN Philippines, Indonesia will be represented by Trade Minister Thomas Lembong and Vice President Jusuf Kalla. The presence of the latter in the Manila APEC Summit was confirmed by Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir to CNN Indonesia.
ABS CBN also noted that according to DFA Undersecretary Laura del Rosario, she was told by Indonesia that Widodo has some domestic concerns that need his attention.
“I got now a message from his senior officials that there are things in Jakarta that need some of his attention and also it’s because he’s coming from the G20 meeting in Turkey and then also – he also has to attend the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur. So, somehow, I think he decided to get that period in between to go home and to address some domestic concerns,” del Rosario said.
On the other hand, Russia will be represented by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in this year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting. Reportedly, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the decision that Russia’s PM will attend Manila APEC Summit was taken because Medvedev had a series of meetings planned in the region anyway.
The Manila APEC Summit will be held in from November 18 to 19.
