Meralco refund will be given to customers this February. A deduction was made on the consumer’s bill.
According to news reports, Meralco overbilled its customers for the months of December 2018 and January 2019. To date the refund has reached the amount of Php 1 billion.
The said Meralco refund is reflected as “NPC Stranded Contract Costs”, which is the universal charge that goes to PSALM (Power Sector and Assets Liability Management)
In an interview, Atty. Vic Dimagiba , President of Laban Konsyumer said that there was no announcement from PSALM or ERC (Energy Regulatory Board).
Meralco clarified that it was not their fault that the customers were overbilled. They said that the letter notification from PSALM to stop collecting 19 centavos was received late.
Spokesperson for the electric giant , Joe Zaldarriaga said that they received the letter February 14. He further said that if they received it earlier, like Novemeber, the refund should’ve been implemented December.
However, the exact amount of the overbill will not be the actual refund. ERC would still be evaluating how much will be refunded.
However, there is pending approval wit ERC on another Stranded Contract Costs
Atty. Vic Dimagiba is suggesting that government should shoulder that cost so that minimum wage earners would need not to pay expensive electricity bill.
