LRT 1 fare may increase its fare if approved by government.
Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) , operator of Light Rail Transit Line 1 is planning a fare hike that will range from Php 5 -Php 7 .
Chief Executive Officer Juan Alfonso of LRMC mentioned n a media briefing today, May 22 that the fare hike is actually “overdue”. It was in 2015 when LRT1 had a price increase.
Last 2016 LRMC filed a petition for 10% increase in fares, which was delayed by the government.
“I think one thing we are banking on [is] fare adjustment [which] will allow us to continue giving good service to our commuters… NEDA said inflation is 4% above but we haven’t increased fares since 2015. We feel that the increase is very reasonable right now,” he said.
Alfonso also pointed out that LRMC spent P8 billion for system restoration and upgrading. This is to ensure that LRT1 provides a more efficient services.
If approved , the LRT 1 fare hike will be effective August 2018.
Current LRT1 fares that range from Php 15 to Php 30 may rise up to Php 22 to Php 37 once new fare is introduced.
If the government will not approve the fare hike, Alfonso mentioned the options of asking the government to subsidize the fare or consider dispute resolution measures as stated under their agreement.
