Aside from Astroboy, Transformers and G. I. Joe, another Japanese animated series from the 80’s gets a reboot.
Robotech was first released in the United States in the mid-80’s. Macross was the original title in Japan and also became a popular animated series in the Philippines.
Sony Pictures announced that Robotech is a potential box-office hit and will release a new live-action film.
The project will be spearheaded by Sony Pictures Entertainment Group President Doug Belgrad, Columbia Pictures Production Chief Michael De Luca, and Sony VP of Creative Production Matthew Milam. Together with producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton (from 300 and Immortals), and writer Michael Gordon (also from 300, as well as G.I. Joe), the film franchise deals with mankind’s use of technology to defend themselves from alien invaders.
“Robotechis unique , that is has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life,” says Michael De Luca of Columbia. “That’s why we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world in a brink of extinction, ‘Robotech’ offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story of possibilities are endless.”
Warner Bros., together with Tobey Maguire and Akiva Goldsman previously had the rights to the material. Mark Canton grabbed the opportunity when it became available. “Robotech is a very significant and legendary part of the growth of anime into the force that it is today, and we’re excited to be adapting it for modern audiences.”
Robotech tells the tale of crashed alien ships, fighter jet plane transforming to giant robots, and human vs. E.T. warfare. The basic fighter jet is called VF-1 Valkyrie. Its half-jet half-robot mode is called Gerwalk, while Battloid mode is the term for its fighting mode.
Macross is the name of the jet carrier/ spaceship which functions as an artificial colony capable of turning into a robot that is in full battle mode such as the Valkyries.
