Popstar Princess Sarah Geronimo has won the Best Asian Performer award at the 2016 Classic Rock Awards held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.
The 2016 edition of the Classic Rock awards marked the first time it was held in Japan.
It was indeed a distinct honor for the Singer-Actress who might have won numerous local and international accolades. But being recognized by an award-giving body dedicated to rock music is even unexpected by the Pop Princess.
But on Friday, the 28-year-old entertainer, Sarah Geronimo received the Best Asian Performer at the 2016 Classic Rock Awards.
Classic Rock which was published by TeamRock, is a British magazine dedicated to rock music that was founded in 1998. Its annual Classic Rock Awards, also known as the Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards, was established in 2004.
According to reports, awardees were chosen by the awards team and voted on by readers of the magazine, then announced at an annual awards show and featured in the magazine.
Sarah, who won the Best Asian Performer performed a rock version of Freddie Aguilar’s “Anak” before a jampacked crowd of 8,000, who were also awed by performances on the same stage by rock legends like Jeff Beck, Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Rudolf Schenker of the Scorpions, Orianthi, Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi, Phil Collen and Joe Elliott of Def Leppard, and Cheap Trick.
The event was being hosted by Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine also featured an all-star house band composed of Rob and Dean DeLeo from Stone Temple Pilots, Korn drummer Ray Luzier and Tommy Hendriksen of Hollywood Vampires who were later joined by actor Johnny Depp in a special number.
Other Winners at 2016 Classic Rock Awards were:
- Beck (The Icon), Sambora (Classic Songwriter),
- Cheap Trick (The Showmen),
- Jeff Lynne’s ELO (Band of the Year),
- “Def Leppard” by Def Leppard (Album of the Year) and
- “The Studio Collection” by Queen (Reissue of the Year).
- Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page presented Beck’s Icon award while
- Schenker presented Sambora’s Classic Songwriter trophy.
Meanwhile, aside from Sarah who was awarded as Best Asian Performer, there are also other Asian honorees such as Slot Machine (Asian Performance), Band-Maid (Japan Next Generation), actor Katsuya Kobayashi (The V.I.P.), One OK Rock (Eastern Breakthrough Male Band) and X Japan founder Yoshiki (The Asian Icon).
Reported further that except for Sarah and Slot Machine which is based in Thailand, all other Asian winners were Japanese.
