Alarming texts about Super Typhoon NENENG has circulated today.
According to these text messages, typhoon Mangkhut (international name) will bring 240 kph winds by Thursday this week, and may increase its intensity up to 306 kph by the weekend. It will be named Neneng once it enters Philippine area of responsibility.
However weather bureau PAGASA debunked this rumors. In it official website www.http://bagong.pagasa.dost.gov.ph/ , announcement was posted saying –
Information circulating on social media and SMS regarding “Super Typhoon NENENG” is NOT coming from PAGASA. For official update regarding tropical cyclones, please log on to bagong.pagasa.dost.gov.ph or www1.pagasa.dost.gov.ph
In another advisory PAGASA stated that –
At 3:00 PM today, the center of Tropical Depression”Neneng”was estimated based on all available dataat 150 km North Northwest of Basco, Batanes(21.7N, 121.4E) with maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 65 km/h. It is movingWest Northwest at 10 km/h.”
In an interview, weather forecaster Ezra Bulquerin told ABS-CBN News –“It’s a hoax. We don’t know yet how strong the typhoon will be,”
“We are expecting on Thursday cloudy skies and scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over the whole Luzon. The western sections of Visayas and Mindanao will also have the effect of the enhanced southwest monsoon, which could bring to moderate to occasionally heavy rains,” he added.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) also estimated that Typhhin Neneng ‘s current strength is at 150 kph, and also does not see it becoming a super typhoon. JMA forecast states that the strongest winds Mangkhut may attain is 205 kph on Thursday.
“Mangkhut” or Typhoon Neneng expected path is Cagayan-Batanes area around Saturday. Hopefully it will exit PAR between Saturday and Sunday.
