BS Applied Mathematics student Raoul Danniel Manuel is UP Visayas’ first summa cum laude with a near-perfect score of 1.099 (GWA).
He made history by being the first student to achieve the highest Latin honors in the Visayan campus and ranks him as the University valedictorian for batch 2015 graduates this June.
“It is a very humbling experience. I know that I could have not made it without the support of my family, friends, classmates, teachers and fellow members of student organizations that I have joined. To be an achiever in UP is really difficult if one alone so I am blessed to have people who have always been supportive of me even in my college life,” said Manuel.
Raoul Danniel Manuel took an active role in various school organizations such as the Student Council Chair for the College of Arts and Sciences in SY 2014 – 2015 and as the Treasurer of the UPV Mathematics Circle. Currently he takes participation in socio-civil organizations as the Lead Convenor for the Youth for Accountability and Truth (ACT) Now – Panay Alliance and a member of Legal Network for Thruthful Elections (LENTE) – UPV Chapter.
According the University website, “Raoul Danniel Manuel is not your typical nerd who confines himself within the four walls of the classroom… (he) was often seen in the frontlines during student protests and rallies.”
Raoul Danniel Manuel was the class 2011 valedictorian in UP High School in Iloilo City and awarded as one of the Philippine Center for Gifted Education’s Mga Bagong Rizal: Pagasa ng Bayan National Awardee also from the same year. He was the chosen few to receive the UP Presidential Scholarship.
“As a Iskolar ng Bayan, I had to open my eyes to the realities around me and look for ways to become an active in the affairs inside and outside the University. My UP education instilled in me a desire to use my potentials to advance genuine social change,” Manuel stated.
In 2011, UP Diliman graduate John Gabriel Pelias holds the record of having a General Weighted Average (GWA) of 1.016.
