Saudi OFW raped allegedly by her employer has died in Riyadh hospital.
Prior to her death, the Saudi OFW raped by her employer suffered a stroke after seeing her rapist in the hospital.
The death of the OFW was confirmed by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Friday.
According to reports, the Saudi OFW raped by emploter was identified by DFA spokesperson Charles Jose as Irma Edloy.
“Death of Ms. Edloy is confirmed,” Jose said. “The DFA will continue to do whatever is necessary for Ms. Irma Edloy and her family, including the repatriation of her remains and legal action against the perpetrator, esp. if the legal report indicates that Ms. Edloy passed due to her wounds from any maltreatment.”
ACTS OFW party-list Rep. Aniceto “John” Bertiz, who is currently in Saudi Arabia to assist stranded OFWs said Edloy died while undergoing treatment in King Salman Hospital.
“She may be gone, but every effort must be made to make sure that her case will not be buried and forgotten,” Bertiz said.
The Saudi OFW raped by employer only arrived in Riyadh last July 28. And as previously reported, she suffered a stroke after seeing her employer in the hospital.
“The OFW had a heart attack immediately after seeing her Saudi employer at the hospital,” Bertiz said. “We cannot discount the possibility that her employer may be involved.”
Further, Filipino nurses who attended to the raped OFW said they saw blood in Edloy’s underwear and bruises on her face and body.
Thus, Blas F. Ople Policy Center, a non-profit organization that assists distressed OFWs, is calling for a “full-scale investigation” on the case of the raped OFW.
“She has been there for less than a month, and now she’s coming home in a coffin,” policy center president Susan Ople said in a statement. “We cannot just brush her death aside, as just another news report, or an added number in an endless string of welfare cases.”
He also urged the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to make sure that the Saudi police will not set aside their investigation because the victim has died.
Meanwhile, the OFW advocate urged both Houses of Congress to look into rape cases involving overseas domestic workers particularly in the Middle East.
“How many have resulted in convictions? Is the number of such cases increasing? Do we have an after-care program to care for these rape victims once they come home?” Ople asked.
