A tilapia Ice Cream, a pride from the Central Luzon State University (CLSU) recently recognized for an International award.
The Tilapia Ice Cream got an Innovation Gold Award during the Salon International de L’Agroalimentaire (SIAL) ASEAN Manila 2016.
The Tilapia flavored ice cream bested 350 exhibitors from 25 countries at the event held at World Trade Center in Pasay City, Manila.
The dessert was made of tilapia fillet, all purpose cream, condensed and fresh milk, chopped walnut and diced cheese, according to the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD).
But for publics information, the ice cream has no fishy smell and aftertaste despite being made of tilapia, PCAARRD said.
The unique flavor was from a study of CLSU assistant professor Dana Vera Cruz while the recipe was an idea of Dr. Tereso Abella.
And from the two person’s names, Dana and Terry came the product name, Daerrys.
The Tilapia Ice Cream line includes Original Flavored Tilapia Ice Cream, Tilapia Sansrival, Tilapia Ice Cream Pops, and Tilapia Ice Cream Sandwich.
Being the recipient of the Innovation Gold Award 2016, the Ice Cream will be showcased in the SIAL networks in Paris, Canada, China, Middle East, and Indonesia, PCAARRD said.
The event was organized by the Comexposium Group and Manila Foods and Beverages Expo, and is part of the SIAL Network, the world’s largest food and beverages exhibition network.
Thus, to support the product development using tilapia, the Department of Science and Technology funded the National Tilapia S&T Program. It was monitored by the Inland Aquatic Resources Research Division of PCAARRD.
